Department Profile:

The Department of History is one of the oldest humanities department of the college, starting its journey along the college establishment in 1949. The Honours curriculum started functioning since 1952. Studying History, which begins in early education, offers valuable choices at various stages. At present three full time faculty members are serving and interacting with students.

History graduates can choose specialized paths like Museology, Archaeology, South-East Asian Studies, Buddhist Studies and International Relations to name a few. It holds significant importance for general knowledge tests and appeals to those aspiring for civil service positions. Apart from academic pursuit, history as a subject has immense scope in the professional world. The department adopts bilingual mode of teaching thus benefitting students from both English and Bengali medium background. History Department aims to equip and empower students with relevant knowledge, competence and creativity to face global challenge. Although many students come from humble background yet their quest for knowledge and enthusiasm in understanding the link between the past present and future needs to be appreciated.
